Getting A Prescription

A UMMC clinician can issue prescriptions to the participating pharmacy of your choice. There are a few limitations, however:

  • We do not prescribe opioids and certain pain medications.

  • Receiving a medication that you've never taken before may require an evaluation from your primary care physician.

Patients who feel they need to be tested for COVID-19 must consult with a clinician through the app to determine their risk level for the disease.

What are examples of conditions that cannot be treated by this service?

Under normal circumstances, UMMC clinicians can treat a wide variety of minor, non-emergency conditions through the C Spire Health app.

However, during the COVID-19 outbreak, however, our services are limited to those who are experiencing a fever, respiratory issues or other COVID-19 symptoms. UMMC clinicians will use audio or video chat to assess patients’ symptoms and determine whether they should be tested for the disease.

Can I access the C Spire Health app on my tablet, laptop or PC?

Right now, the app is only available on your mobile phone.

Will my data be secure?

C Spire does not have access to the personal and medical information collected and used by UMMC. It is stored in MDLIVE's software platform in order for UMMC to provide healthcare service. All data stored with MDLIVE for UMMC's use is in a HIPPA and HITECH certified environment.

Will my appointment be recorded?

Yes, we record appointments for quality control.

Can my prescription be transferred?

Once a UMMC clinician has issued a prescription to a pharmacy, you can transfer it by contacting that pharmacy and asking them to send it to the location you prefer.

Why can C Spire Health only be used in Mississippi?

To make sure you get the best care possible, we only used licensed clinicians. Our clinicians are licensed in the state of Mississippi.

How do I prepare for an appointment?

Before your visit, make sure you have good lighting and a strong internet connection, and in some cases, it may be helpful to take pictures of the condition.

What are examples of conditions that cannot be treated by this service?

Through the C Spire Health app, UMMC clinicians can treat the minor and seasonal conditions that account for 70% of medical visits. Some conditions, however, require the immediate services of a doctor, emergency room or hospital. A few examples:
  • Concussion or traumatic injuries
  • Chest pain or numbness
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Lacerations or broken bones
  • Coughing up or vomiting blood
  • Severe burns
  • Symptoms that are signs of a serious event, such as a stroke.

If prescription medication is needed, can I use my insurance?

A UMMC clinician can send your prescription to the retail pharmacy you choose. Your standard insurance prescription coverage applies just like it would with other prescriptions. Please consult with your healthcare insurance for prescription coverage.

What is MDLIVE?

MDLIVE is a technology partner of C Spire and UMMC on the C Spire Health app. Once you register for C Spire Health, you'll schedule your appointment with UMMC clinicians on the MDLIVE platform. You'll then receive system messages from MDLIVE with information about your appointment. Charges to your credit card are administered by MDLIVE.

What ailments are treated?

However, during the COVID-19 outbreak, our services are limited to those with one or multiple symptoms such as cough, fever, sore throat, shortness of breath, or exposure to COVID-19.

Does this replace my primary care physician?

No, through the C Spire Health app, UMMC clinicians can treat common, non-emergency conditions, but it is not intended to replace your primary care physician.
