Memory walls and commemorative video honor resilience of communities and first responders
RIDGELAND, Miss. (Aug. 27, 2025) – C Spire, a Mississippi-based advanced technology solutions company, remembers the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina’s landfall on the Gulf Coast by recognizing the resilience of its customers, the communities impacted, first responders and the grit shown by team members to restore critical communications when it mattered most.
When Hurricane Katrina made landfall on Aug. 29, 2005, it brought unprecedented destruction to the Gulf Coast. Although devastation was widespread and communications challenging, C Spire, then known as Cellular South, maintained cellular service during the storm across many of the affected areas, including Hattiesburg and Biloxi. The company responded swiftly and had upwards of 20 crews deployed on the first day to assess damage and begin repairs to cell sites.
To honor the memory of Hurricane Katrina and those impacted by it, C Spire retail locations will display memory walls where visitors can share memories, honor loved ones and reflect on the resilience of our communities during and after the storm. The commemorative video, Remembering Hurricane Katrina, offers a heartfelt look back at the storm’s impact and the company’s efforts to reconnect communities.
Within 24 hours of landfall, C Spire teams restored 60 percent of the network in the six hardest hit counties. By the weekend, the network was nearly 100 percent operational. Team members worked around the clock, often without rest or basic comforts, driven by the need to help reconnect communities.
While network work ensued, other teams moved with swift action to deliver more than 2,000 cell phones to Gulf Coast first responders, government agencies and non-profits. Charging stations and complimentary calls were available at retail locations so community members could stay in touch with family and friends.
