Spanish Fort High School will begin its quest for a second straight Class 5A state in this Baldwin County regular season opener with 6A powerhouse Daphne High School. Coach Mark Freeman's Toros won their second title in three years last season, rolling to a 14-1 record, but loast a load of experienced players, including three first-time All-State selections. The Trojans and Coach Glenn Vickery are looking to improve on their 8-4 record from last year and a return to championship form with their first Class 6A title since 2010.

Davidson High School, 9-2 in 2012, will be looking to establish some momentum after a 10-0 loss to Fairhope in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs last year when Coach Fred Riley's Warriors square off against Baker High School. The Homets are coming off their first playoff berth since 1990 under Coach Jack French, who won 2012 region coach of the year honors for Baker's breakthrough performance. Baker finished 7-4 and came within a field goal of pulling off a major upset in the final minute of a 30-28 first round loss to Foley last year.

Daphne High School, which has been one of Alabama's most dominant teams in the last 8 years with a combined 100-30 won-loss record, will go on the road in this key 6A match up with the Foley High Lions hoping to gain important momentum for a stretch run. Foley aims to improve on an 8-4 record from last year and a disappointing 39-21 loss to Spain Park in the second round of the 6A playoffs after taking a 21-7 lead in the game. The Lions' coaching staff has undergone an offseason overhaul with a new offensive coordinator and offensive line coach.

Davidson High goes on the road and squares off against perinial 6A powerhouse McGill-Toolen High School, which went undefeated in the 2012 regular season with an 11-1 overall record. The Yellow Jackets, who lost to Aubum 29-28 in the second round of last year's playoffs, are led by rising senior running back Ito Smith and his lethal combination of power and speed. Smith ran for 751 yards and 13 touchdowns in 2012. He also caught two touchdown passes. Davidson has won 81 games and three region titles since 2004.
