The Salvation Army, C Spire Make it Easier for Consumers to Support the Red Kettle Holiday Giving Campaign

Telecom provider and non-profit combat challenge of fewer shoppers with cash by expanding program that offers convenient credit and debit card donations through giving station kiosks at selected locations

Jackson, Miss. - (December 1, 2015) – To help celebrate #Giving Tuesday and the global focus today on generosity, The Salvation Army is using a grant from C Spire to expand a groundbreaking technology initiative that promises to boost donations to the non-profit’s Red Kettle holiday giving campaign in the greater Jackson metropolitan area.

Consumers now have the option to make credit and debit card donations at up to 12 of the non-profit’s 53 Red Kettle locations in the tri-county region – thanks to the availability of giving station kiosks equipped with tablets and connected to C Spire’s mobile broadband network and equipped with secure e-readers and swipe technology.

The Salvation Army’s Red Kettle campaign is a hallmark of the holidays and the largest annual fundraiser with proceeds used to support a variety of year-round programs and services for the poor and needy, including food, clothing, temporary shelter, utility assistance, disaster relief and life-skill and character building programs.

During the next few weeks, over 5,000 volunteers will sing and ring bells for up to 10 hours at a time in front of local malls, stores and businesses throughout the metropolitan area – a vivid reminder that the season is as much about giving as about receiving.

“It’s an important time of the year in the communities we serve as individuals focus on giving to those in need,” said Captain Ken Chapman, regional coordinator for the Salvation Army in Jackson. “It takes an army of volunteers and business partners like C Spire to help us communicate the significance of responding at this time of year.”

Salvation Army representatives said a 2014 technology trial demonstrated that consumers and shoppers like the convenience of credit card donations. As part of the trial, C Spire donated 20 smartphones and tablets and provided mobile broadband service along with funds used to purchase secure e-readers that accept credit and debit card charges.

“We’re pleased to continue our support for the Salvation Army, an organization that is making a difference in the communities we serve,” said Jim Richmond, vice president of Corporate Communications for C Spire. “As a telecommunications company that gets its inspiration from our customers, we’re excited about the use of technology to help support programs that change people’s lives.”

The Red Kettle campaign officially began on Nov. 16 and will continue through Dec. 24. With more shoppers using credit cards for the bulk of their purchases, the non-profit charity hopes making it easier and more convenient to donate will help it reach its $750,000 fundraising goal. “We’re adapting to changing times. Giving stations will help us reach even more people with our life-changing programs,” Chapman said.

Chapman said the mobile credit card donations are safe and secure as donor’s personal information and numbers are encrypted and protected from any potential fraud, loss or theft. “We use the latest software and security protocols to protect the personal financial information of all our donors,” he said.
