GETTING STARTED
- Setting up the PHOTON Q
The first time you turn on your phone, a setup wizard guides you through signing in to your existing Google™ account. If you don’t have a Google account, you can create one using the wizard.
Tip: Remember your username and password, or write them down and keep them in a safe place.

To turn your phone on, press and hold the Power key. To turn your phone off, press and hold the Power key, then tap Power off on the screen.

To send a file in a message, open a new message and tap Menu > Attach. When you receive a message with an attachment, open the message and tap the file name to download it. Tap the name again to open it.
Some file formats can be converted to HTML for faster viewing. Your phone will display a button reading Get HTML version if that option is available.
Tip: To send and receive large attachments faster, use a Wi-Fi connection.

How to find it: Home > Apps > YouTube
The YouTube video community is a user-generated content website where you share videos with YouTube users everywhere. You don't need a YouTube account to browse and view videos.
Note: If you don't have a YouTube account, visit http://www.youtube.com to find out more.
View popular video categories like Most Viewed, Most Discussed and Most Recent. Tap a category and then tap the video to play it. To see more video categories, tap Menu > Categories. To watch a video in high quality, tap Menu > More > Watch in high quality.

Enter text, then tap the magnifying glass icon. To clear your search history, tap Menu > Settings > Clear search history.

- Uploading Videos
How to find it: Menu > Upload
- Tap the video you want to upload. You can change the video title and description, set access, and add tags.
- Tap Upload.
File Transfer
- Transferring Files from a PC
- Connect the PHOTON Q to a PC using the included USB cable.
- Access the notifications bar by dragging it down and then click on the USB Connection notification.
- Select Mount in the pop-up menu.
- On the PC, go to My Computer and select the external disk drive to access files on the PHOTON Q’s SD card.
- Drag and drop contents onto the SD card.
Text Messages
- Sending a Text Message
- Tap Messages.
- Tap New Message.
- Tap the "To" field and begin typing a name.
Note: The "To" field will automatically filter through your contacts as you type. - Select a contact from the filtered list to automatically add as the recipient.
- Tap the “Press to Compose” field and type your message.
- Tap Send.
Bluetooth®
- Pairing a Headset or Other Bluetooth Device
- Access the Bluetooth settings: Apps > Settings > Wireless & network settings > Bluetooth.
Note: When not using Bluetooth, turn it off to maximize battery life. - Power on Bluetooth and the device you wish to pair with.
- Scan for devices.
- Select the device to pair with.
- Choose Pair in the pop-up menu to establish a connection.
- Access the Bluetooth settings: Apps > Settings > Wireless & network settings > Bluetooth.
Internet
- Connecting to the Internet
To connect to the Internet, access the App Menu and click Browser.
You can access the Web via the C Spire network or Wi-Fi, where available.
To manage Wi-Fi networks, press Apps > Settings > Wireless & network settings > Wi-Fi settings. Tap Wi-Fi to turn it on and tap Wi-Fi settings to search for nearby wireless networks. Tap a network to connect.
Note: This menu can also be used to add new Wi-Fi networks and manage previously connected networks.
Your phone uses the mobile phone network (over the air) to automatically connect to the Web.

When you tap a link, your phone outlines it and goes to that page. If you tap and hold the link, your phone shows options like Open in a new window or Bookmark link.
Tap Menu to see the browser options:
- Refresh - Reload the current page.
- Windows - View the browser windows that are currently open.
- New Window - Add a new browser window to your list.
- Back/Forward - Navigate to previously viewed pages.
- Bookmark - Add the current page to your bookmark list.
- More - Access options like Add bookmark, Find on page, Add shortcut to home screen, Save page, Select text, Page info, Share page, Downloads and Settings.
Google Maps™
- Setting Location Sources
How to find it: Home > Maps
Google Maps opens in "Map mode."
Set your phone to determine your location using GPS satellite signals (highly accurate but uses battery power) or the mobile network (less accurate but conserves battery power).
To set your location, tap Apps > Settings > Location Services > GPS Satellites.

From the main map screen, tap Menu > My Location. Your location appears on the map as a blue circle. The bigger the circle is, the less accurate the location.
Note: Don’t forget to set your location sources.

- Tap Menu > Search.
- Enter text in the search box like an address, business or city, and then tap the magnifying glass icon.
Tip: If it’s an address you’ve looked up before, select it from the list shown. - Tap the search box to view the results, and then tap the one you want.
- Getting Directions
- Tap Menu > Directions.
- Enter a starting-point address or tap and select My current location, Contacts, or Points on map.
- Enter an end-point address or tap and select Contacts or Points on map.
- Select your mode of transportation (car, public transport or walk) and then tap Go. Your directions are displayed as a list. To view your directions on a map, tap Show on map.
- When finished, tap Menu > More > Clear map.

- Downloading an Application
How to find it: Home > Google Play
Navigate Google Play by using the categories at the top of the display or by searching for a specific application.
- To search for an app, click on the Search icon (magnifying glass).
- Type the name of the app and push the icon again to search.
- Click on an application to view more information like the description, user ratings, screen shots and developer information.
- Press Install to download the application.
Note: You can access all of your downloaded applications from Google Play at any time by pressing Menu > Downloads.
Wallpaper
- Changing the Wallpaper
- Find an empty spot on your home screen, then tap and hold.
- Tap Wallpapers.
- Tap Media gallery to select a photo as your wallpaper, or tap the Wallpaper gallery to choose from among the preloaded wallpapers.
Camera
- Exploring Photo Options
Camera Scenes - Slow Motion Video, Auto, HDR, Panorama, Portrait
Effects - Apply different color effects to images: Sepia (for an antique look), Black and White, Negative (to invert the image) and Steady.
Flash - Choose Automatic, On or Off.

Advanced Tips
microSD™ Memory Card
- Formatting or Removing Your microSD Card
Before formatting your memory card, you need to unmount it from the PHOTON Q. Tap Apps > Settings > Storage > Unmount SD card. To then format the memory card, tap Format SD card.
Warning: The formatting process deletes all data on the memory card.
Before removing your memory card, unmount it by tapping Apps > Settings > Storage > Unmount SD card. To then remove the memory card, tap your microSD card and remove it.

Widgets
- Adding a Widget
You can add widgets like a clock, music player or appointment calendar to the home screen.
To add a widget, tap Home > Apps > Widgets. If your home screen is full, you won’t see the option to add. You’ll need to delete existing widgets or shortcuts to make room.

To delete a widget, tap and hold the widget icon while dragging it to the trash can at the bottom of the screen. The trash can will turn red; then you can release.

Get all the fun games and cool apps you want! Software developers constantly add to Google Play so there’s always something new to try. If you have questions about Google Play, tap Menu > Help.
Collapse - Browsing and Installing Apps
Scroll to and tap the app you want to install. Then, tap Install (if the app is free) or Buy.
Warning: If an app you are downloading requires access to your data or control of functions of your phone, you’ll be asked to give your permission. After selecting Install, the app will download. After selecting Buy, you may be asked to sign in to an additional Google account. Sign in and select Purchase now to proceed. Follow the on-screen instructions. To see the download progress, open the notifications window.
After you download an app, the icon for that app appears on your Apps.

- Setting the Screen Lock
A Screen Lock is a touch or visual gesture you create and use to unlock your phone. To set a Screen Lock, tap Apps > Settings > Security > Screen lock. Follow the instructions to draw your pattern and enter your Personal Identification Number (PIN) or password.
