- Android Performance Tips
- Make sure you have the latest software installed on your device. Your device's software version can be found in Menu > Settings > About. If there is a newer version of your software, you can download it at our Software Update Hub. Access this information using your computer.
- Make sure to power off and restart your device weekly. You can do this by holding down the power button for 5-10 seconds and then selecting "Power Off." You can also remove the battery and reinsert it.
- When charging your phone, use the wall charger that came with your phone.
- Clear the app cache for your apps. We recommend App Cache Cleaner. It's a handy tool that, with one touch, will clean out the application cache of all your applications. Clearing the cache for your applications will help your phone run more smoothly.
- Clear your phone history once a month. History Eraser can clear out your browser history, as well as the call log, text messages, Market search history, Google Map search history, Gmail search history, Clipboard data, YouTube search history, Google search history, all app cache files, and Frequently Called history. - How do I turn my phone on and off?

- How do I unlock the screen?
To conserve battery life, the screen "times out" after 30 seconds. To access the screen after it times out, press the Power key, then press and drag the lock screen to either side.
Lock the screen at any time by pressing the Power key.

- How do I set up a Gmail™ account?
Before being able to access the Android Market™, you must set up a Gmail account through the Gmail application pre-loaded on the phone. Access the app by pressing Applications > Gmail. (Set up another type of email account by pressing Applications > Email.)
To set up a new Gmail account, press Sign Up.
To access an existing Gmail account, press Sign In.

Turn Wi-Fi on by pressing Menu > Settings > Wireless & Networks > Wi-Fi On.

- How do I make a call?
Press the Phone icon in the menu bar at the bottom of the home screen. From there, you can dial a number or type the name of a contact. Press the green Call button to make the call.
During a call, the following on-screen options are available:
- Add Call
- End Call
- Dialpad (pulls up the dialpad during a call)
You can also press the Menu key during a call to access your contact list or send a message.
End a call by pressing the red End Call button.
Within the phone application, there are four tabs:
- Dialer - dial a number directly
- Call Log - view recent incoming/outgoing calls
- Contacts - view saved contacts
- Favorites - view user-designated favorite contacts
- How do I answer a call?
Upon receiving a call, press and hold the green phone button and drag it to the right.
Ignore a call by pressing and holding the red phone button while dragging it to the left.
In addition to ignoring a call, you can send the caller a message. Upon receiving a call, press and hold the Reject Call with Message tab at the bottom of the screen and drag it to the top. Select Create New Message to compose a text message to the caller.Collapse
- How do I send a text message?
Press the Messaging icon in the menu bar at the bottom of the home screen, and press New Message.
Enter a recipient, type the message and press Send.
Messages exchanged with a single contact will be saved as a conversation thread in the Messaging application. To access any thread, press the Messaging icon in the menu bar and click on the conversation you wish to view.
When a new text message is received, a message icon will appear on the phone's lock screen the next time you access the device. To view the message, go to the Messaging application or drag down the notification bar and press the message alert to go to the conversation.
Note: The notification bar is located at the top of the screen and allows you to quickly check for new texts, emails or missed calls. To access the notification bar, press and hold the black bar at the top of the screen and drag it to the bottom of the screen.Collapse
- How do I set up my voice mail?
Press the Phone icon in the menu bar at the bottom of the home screen. Press and hold "1" to access your voice mail.
To set up or change your voice mail settings, follow the menu prompts.
You will be notified of new voice mails by a voice mail icon in the notification bar.
Note: Existing voice mail customers upgrading to this phone will not have to set up their voice mail again. New customers with voice mail and existing customers just getting voice mail will need to complete the setup process.Collapse
- How do I access the Internet?
Press Applications > Browser.
To access a website, press the address bar at the top of the page and enter a valid URL. You can also do a Google search from this search bar.

- How do I set up my email?
To set up an email account (other than Google), access the Email application by pressing Applications > Email.
If you use a common provider like Yahoo!®, Hotmail®, MSN® or AOL®, enter your email and password to set up your account.
If you use an exchange server or a non-traditional service provider, press Manual Setup and enter the information to set up your account.
Note: Multiple email accounts can be supported from within the Email application. Press Menu > Accounts to switch between them.Collapse
- How do I send an email?
Press Applications > Email > Menu > Compose.
Enter a recipient, subject and message, and press Send.
Before sending, press Menu to attach a file or copy other recipients.
Note: If sending an email to one of your contacts, begin typing the contact's name and choose the recipient from the drop down menu that appears.Collapse
- How do I send or receive an email attachment?
After composing an email, press Menu > Attach to include an attachment. From here, you will navigate the menus to attach the specific file you wish to send.
Upon receiving an email with an attachment, open the email and tap the name of the file to download it. Once complete, tap the file name again to open it.
Note: To attach a picture, video or ringtone to an email, access the file and press Menu > Share > Email.Collapse
- How do I customize my home screen?
The home screen of the Gem has seven fully customizable pages. Beyond the ability to change the desktop background, you can add shortcuts to applications, contacts, bookmarks, menus, widgets and folders.
Change the wallpaper by pressing Menu > Wallpaper, then select the image you want to use.
To add an application shortcut, press and hold an open space on the home screen. Select Shortcuts > Applications from the pop-up menu and choose the app to put on the home screen.
To move or delete a shortcut or widget on a home screen, press and hold the icon. The screen will vibrate and the menu bar will be replaced by a garbage can icon. Drag the shortcut to a new location or drag it to the garbage can to remove it completely.

- How do I change the sounds and volume?
The volume control is on the left side of the phone. Push up to increase the current volume level, and push down to decrease it. This button controls ringer volume, in-call volume, speaker volume and media volume.
Change the default ringtone of your phone by pressing Menu > Settings > Sound & Display > Phone Ringtone > New Tone > OK.
Change the default notification tone of your phone by pressing Menu > Settings > Sound & Display > Notification Ringtone > New Tone > OK.Collapse
- How do I use the camera?
Take a picture by pressing Applications > Camera. Aim the camera and press the shutter button on the screen to snap a photo.
Record a video by pressing Applications > Camera. Toggle to video mode on the right side of the screen. Press the red record button to begin recording and press it again to stop.
Press Applications > Gallery > Camera Pictures to view pictures.
Note: You can send picture messages or emails directly from the Gallery by accessing an image and pressing Share.Collapse
- How do I use the Android Market™?
The Android Market has over 100,000 applications available for download in 27 different categories. To access the Market, press Applications > Market.
The home page of the Market contains a carousel of applications along with a search button and links to the following:
- Apps - select a category for browsing
- Games - view available games
- My Apps - view your installed apps
Search for an application by pressing the search button and entering a category or app name.
Search results will be returned according to relevance. Tap a specific result to view more information about it.
On the main page of the application, you can choose to install it, read the app description, see user ratings or see similar applications. To install, tap the word FREE and accept the permissions. Once the application has downloaded successfully, a notification will appear in the notification bar at the top of the home screen.
Note: Not all apps are free. If an app has to be purchased, the cost will appear instead of the word FREE. To purchase an app you must enter your credit card information. You must enter your credit card information for the first app purchase but subsequent purchases will use the saved information.Collapse
- How do I customize the menu bar?
Press Applications > Menu > Edit. From here, you can drag and drop apps into the Menu bar or rearrange apps in the app list.Collapse
- How do I use turn-by-turn navigation?
Use the turn-by-turn navigation feature by pressing Applications > Navigation. Upon initial launch, you will have to accept the terms and conditions.
If GPS is not already enabled, it will have to be turned on to use the Navigation app. Turn GPS on by pressing Menu > Settings > Location & Security. Check Use Wireless Networks and Use GPS Satellites.
From the home screen of the Navigation app, enter a destination by speaking or typing the address. Once a verified address is selected, you can follow the audio prompts to your destination.
Tip: When not using GPS, turn it off to conserve battery life. You can turn GPS off quickly by dragging down the notification bar.Collapse
- How do I use a third-party text messaging app?
There are a variety of text messaging replacement applications in the Android Market. Handcent SMS and chompSMS are two of the most popular. If you download a text message replacement app, you must disable notifications in the Messaging app that is preloaded on the Gem to avoid being notified of new messages multiple times.
To disable notifications within the Messaging app preloaded on the Gem, press Applications > Messaging > Menu > Settings and uncheck the box next to Notifications.Collapse
- How do I use Bluetooth?
Use the Gem's Bluetooth feature to connect to other Bluetooth-enabled devices to transfer music, videos, ringtones and other types of files. In addition to the ability to transfer files, Bluetooth allows you to pair the Gem with handsfree devices for easier use.
Turn Bluetooth on by pressing Menu > Settings > Wireless & Networks > Bluetooth on OR tap the Bluetooth icon at the top of the notification bar.
Access Bluetooth settings by pressing Menu > Settings > Wireless & Networks > Bluetooth settings. You'll find the following options:
- Bluetooth On/Off button
- Device Name - Give your phone a unique name to be more easily identified when scanning.
- Discoverable - Allow other Bluetooth devices to find your phone when scanning.
- Scan Devices - Look for other Bluetooth devices around you.
- Bluetooth Devices - View the list of paired devices.
To connect to another Bluetooth device, make sure that the device you're trying to pair with is discoverable. Once it is, press Menu > Settings > Wireless & Networks > Bluetooth Settings > Scan Devices. When the list of found devices appears, press the one to pair with. A pop-up menu will display a password and present the option to Accept or Decline. To finalize the connection, press Accept and make sure that the device you're pairing with does the same.
You can send files on your phone to other users via Bluetooth. To do this, navigate to the file you wish to send and press Menu > Share > Bluetooth. Select the device to receive the file from the list of paired devices. Once the other device accepts the transfer, it should go through easily.
Note: The following files can be sent via Bluetooth:
- Calendar Events
- Voice Recordings
- How do I lock my phone?
You can protect the sensitive data on your phone with a lock code. Having an active lock code requires the code to be entered before the device can be "unlocked" or accessed.
To set a lock code, press Menu > Settings > Location & Security > Set Unlock Pattern. Follow the instructions and create a pattern you can remember. Confirm the pattern and the lock code is set.
Once the screen has timed out, you can enter the lock code by pressing the Power button and then entering the code. When entered correctly, the device becomes accessible.
The lock code can be disabled at any time by pressing Menu > Settings > Location & Security. Uncheck the box reading "Require pattern." Confirm the pattern to remove it.Collapse
